Johnson Makes Waves in Win Over Santa Clara

Marques Johnson scored a season-high 21 points to lead Pepperdine to a 75-69 victory over visiting Santa Clara on Friday night.

Johnson took eight shots, all from three-point range, and made five.

Marc McDowell added 19 points for the Waves (6-17, 4-7 West Coast Conference).

Marlon Garnett led Santa Clara (13-10, 7-4) with 14 points on a night when five Broncos scored in double figures.

Santa Clara pulled to 71-69 with 31 seconds to go, but the Waves made four of six free throws over the final seconds to seal the victory.

St. Mary’s 69, Loyola Marymount 65--Josh Unruh made two free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining to clinch the victory at Loyola’s Gersten Pavilion.

The Gaels (17-7, 7-4 West Coast Conference) led by 25 points with 18:59 remaining in the game.

Loyola (6-17, 3-8) used spurts of 14-0 and 12-3 to get back into the game.

David Sivulich scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half for St. Mary’s.

Tim Kennedy led Loyola with 16 points. Kenny Hotopp added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Gaels made only five field goals in the final 15:50 of the game, all on layups or dunks.

Loyola controlled the boards, 40-26, including a 29-11 edge in the second half.

OTHER GAMES

Princeton 81, Yale 51--The Ivy League-leading Tigers, with a team-record 17 three-pointers at Princeton, won their 13th game in a row, raising their Ivy League record to 8-0 and their overall mark to 18-3 overall. Yale dropped to 1-8, 8-13, and lost any chance for the Ivy title.

Forward Gabe Lewullis led the Tiger attack, making six of seven from three-point range on his way to a career-high 24 points.

Yale forward Daniel Okonkwa led the Bulldogs, matching Lewullis’ 24 points.

College Basketball Notes

Furman Coach Joe Cantafio announced that he will resign at the end of the season. . . . The Mid-American Conference has suspended Ball State assistant coach Tim Buckley for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game.
