‘96 Home Prices--ZIP by ZIP

“Winners and Losers of 1996,” our January story on home prices and sales, attracted such reader interest that we decided to take one last, much more detailed look at the year.

Today’s chart covers all the ZIP Codes in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties that recorded 10 or more home sales in 1996.

According to Acxiom/DataQuick of La Jolla, of the 517 ZIPs, 425 had sales increases. ZIPs with the biggest sales increases were 91739 in Rancho Cucamonga with 80.2%, Murrieta’s 92563, with 77.9%, and Santa Monica’s 90404 with 65.1%.

As for prices, 244 of the 517 ZIPs experienced increases in the median price paid for a home, while 247 saw the median dip. The remaining ZIPS were flat.

It is important to keep in mind, said Acxiom/DataQuick analyst John Karevoll, that ups and downs in median prices are influenced by shifts in the types and sizes of homes selling, as well as by increases and decreases in home values.
