Mars rises in the east shortly before 8 p.m. Next Monday evening the moon will rise just below Mars. Later that evening the moon will be 5 1/2 degrees, or 11 moon diameters, almost directly below Mars (drawing is not to scale). Orange Mars is less than one month from its closest approach to Earth, and it is as bright as the brightest star.
