Keep Air Bags Intact, Ex-Safety Chiefs Say

Four former heads of a federal highway safety agency attacked the Clinton administration’s proposal to allow drivers to disconnect air bags, saying it “could breed wholesale skepticism” about federal standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at President Clinton’s urging, has proposed letting mechanics disconnect air bags for consumers in response to concerns about children being killed by the safety devices.
