A lawsuit that accused police of picking up homeless men downtown and dropping them off in remote neighborhoods was settled out of court. The settlement was made public by the city and the American Civil Liberties Union in a joint statement Tuesday.

The city won’t make any payments to homeless people but agreed to pay $9,000 to the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless. The city also agreed to pay $7,000 to ACLU lawyers who pursued the case.

Cleveland also said it would advise police to contact social service programs to help homeless people get food or shelter.
