John C. Cosgrove; Executive, Philanthropist

John C. Cosgrove, 84, insurance executive, former harbor commissioner and philanthropic leader. Cosgrove, born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University, was formerly president of Cosgrove & Company, founded by his father, and was division president of its successor, Marsh & McLennan. He was named to the Los Angeles Harbor Commission in 1954. As executive, donor and fund-raiser, Cosgrove benefited educational institutions including Stanford, Caltech, Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School and Pomona College. He also turned his interest in tennis and basketball into support for the Southern California Tennis Assn., the Youth Tennis Foundation and the Los Angeles YMCA, which in 1963 awarded him its highest honor, the Golden Book of Distinguished Service. Cosgrove was president of the Emphysema Foundation of Los Angeles, treasurer of Anytown USA Inc. and advisor to the Coro Foundation. He commanded a ship in the Pacific during World War II.
