Joseph Herman; Aided Jewish Charities

Joseph Herman, 94, an air-conditioning entrepreneur who aided Jewish charities. Herman was born in Springfield, Ill., grew up in St. Louis and moved to Los Angeles in his youth. In 1922, Herman joined his father Jacob in the air-conditioning contracting firm, J. Herman Co.; he became its president in 1946. He served as president of Los Angeles’ Fire and Police Pension Fund Commission and on two state boards, the Industrial Safety Board and the Contractors License Board. Herman was also president of the Los Angeles Lodge of B’nai B’rith No. 487, Temple Israel of Hollywood and the Guardians Men’s Club of the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging. He was active in the United Jewish Appeal, the Anti-Defamation League and the Sutton Post of Jewish War Veterans, which named him man of the year.
