They Don’t Want Chick in Refrigerator Yet

After reading over and over the sad and bitter letter from Diana Romer [Feb. 15], I couldn’t wait to answer that nonsense with a real lifelong Laker fan’s point of view. The real basketball fans around the world know what kind of man Chick Hearn is. As to the charge that Chick makes racial remarks, you can ask Stu Lantz if Chick sees any colors other than purple and gold.

Chick Hearn has given me more pleasure and enjoyment in my lifetime than any person on the planet outside of my family. I want Chick to continue as the voice of the Lakers as long as he wants the job. He makes an occasional mistake, but to paraphrase Ms. Romer: Hey, Diana, nobody cares.

I’m calling Ms. Romer for a flagrant foul and Chick gets possession of the ball for as long as he wants it.

Chick, I have listened to your broadcasts of Laker games since the mid-’60s. To me, you are the finest basketball announcer who ever lived.

Anyone who is a Laker fan knows Chick Hearn is a man of class, excellence and compassion--and totally without bigotry of any kind.

I hope you will continue to remember that to us Laker fans, it is Chick who is important and not some guy at The Times.
