Service Workers Union Endorses Hayden

The Service Employees International Union--which represents 120,000 city workers, school employees and health care workers, among others--voted Saturday to endorse Tom Hayden’s bid to be mayor of Los Angeles.
About 100 union members attended an almost daylong question-and-answer session with Hayden, two candidates for City Council and two school board contenders. The union’s executive board chose candidates based on recommendations from the members in attendance, said SEIU spokeswoman Julie Butcher.
Mayor Richard Riordan, staunchly opposed by the union’s leaders for his efforts to privatize many city services, sent a message Saturday morning that an emergency prevented him from attending the town hall-style meeting, Butcher said.
SEIU also voted to support Kenneth Sackman, an LAUSD parent, for the school board seat being vacated by Mark Slavkin. The union chose not to endorse in the race to succeed Councilman Marvin Braude, who is retiring after 30 years at City Hall.
