Short-Term Shelter for Youths Sought

Share

Interface Children, Family Services is seeking Ventura County families interested in providing short-term shelter for children in need.

The agency is looking for people to provide so-called Cool Homes for youths between the ages of 10 and 17 who need some space while they work out problems with their parents. The families are asked to provide children with a place to stay in the evenings and on weekends.

“If these adolescents can have a cooling-off period . . . it gives them an opportunity just to be able to think before making any drastic changes in their lives,” said Maureen Miller, coordinator of volunteer services for Interface. “They are not there to counsel children, just support them through this crisis period.”

All youngsters are screened before being placed in Cool Homes, Miller said. Training and a small financial reimbursement are provided to Cool Home families, along with day care and transportation for clients Monday through Friday.
