8 Awarded Landfill Fund Scholarships

The City Council has approved the use of a portion of the so-called Lopez Canyon Landfill “amenities fund” to help eight San Fernando Valley students attend Mission College.

Each student will receive $400 for the spring semester from the Ernani Bernardi Scholarship Trust Fund, which was created in honor of the longtime councilman.

The scholarship money comes from a trust fund created in 1991 to improve the lives of people living near the Lopez Canyon Landfill.

Only students from the landfill area--Lake View Terrace and Pacoima--are eligible for the scholarships, said Annette Castro, chief deputy for Councilman Richard Alarcon, who represents part of the area.

Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 2.5 and perform 10 hours of community service during the semester.

Applicants submit two-page essays on aspects of solid-waste management and recycling.

The council voted to give the funds to Mission College, which will deduct it from the students’ term bills. Six of the eight recipients had also earned the scholarships for the fall 1996 semester.

The recipients are Kimberly Evans, Juan Frias, Erick Garcia, Lisa Mendoza, Jesus Ochoa, Vanessa Valenzuela, Elia Bair and Jerry Julao.
