Defending Generation X
Author Mike Males argues in his book “The Scapegoat Generation” that contrary to pop wisdom, today’s youths are no more violent or drug-addicted than their adult role models. In fact, Males says, young people’s behavior only mirrors the general environment in which they are growing up .
The scapegoating of Generation X teenagers and young adults is all part of a “war on adolescents” that Males contends is unfair and detrimental to society.
Males, a teacher and doctoral candidate from UC Irvine, will discuss his theories in a lecture and dialogue being held tonight for parents, volunteers and professionals who work with young people and anyone else interested in the topic.
The program is sponsored by the National Conference (formerly the National Conference of Christians and Jews), a human relations organization. Tonight’s lecture is part of a weekly series of speakers that address youth issues.
