From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A young carjack killer whose victim secretly recorded her last minutes was sentenced to life in prison after the grieving widower angrily asked him: “Was it worth it?” Michael LaSane, 17, who was identified in part by the tape and pleaded guilty to murder, was given the maximum sentence by Judge Peter Giovine. LaSane won’t be eligible for parole for 30 years. After she was carjacked from a shopping plaza in March 1996, 45-year-old schoolteacher Kathleen Weinstein flipped on a microcassette recorder and taped 46 minutes of conversation.
