Man Hurt in Accident in Critical Condition
A man suspected of driving while intoxicated remained in critical condition Sunday at Ventura County Medical Center from injuries suffered when his car slammed into a truck near Ojai, authorities said.
John Michael Phane, 44, of Glendale suffered a broken leg and internal injuries in the crash on California 150 near Sulphur Mountain Road about noon Friday, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police said Phane was driving east about 60 mph when he crossed over the center line and clipped the rear wheels of the tractor-trailer, then spun off the road.
The driver of the truck, Guillermo Andrade, 36, of Ontario, and a passenger, Isabel Gandara, 32, of Sylmar, were not injured, police said.
Phane has a history of drunk-driving arrests and was on probation from a prior alcohol-related arrest, authorities said.
