Shooting Range Discussion Planned

Share

A discussion of options for the city’s unsettled shooting range has been rescheduled for this Monday’s City Council meeting.

About a dozen concerned residents, mostly local National Rifle Assn. members, waited for 4 1/2 hours at last week’s council meeting while council members discussed another issue. The council apologized to the audience, but adjourned the meeting at 11:30 p.m. rather than start the range talks then.

The Huntington Beach Police Officers Assn. has operated the range at Central Park on a $1-a-year lease since 1972. However, the city decided not to renew the union’s lease, citing safety and noise concerns. The range was also built atop an old landfill, leaving it with costly foundation and contamination problems. Proposed options include rebuilding the range at Central Park or finding a new site.

The city has ordered the Police Officers Assn. off the old site. But Community Services Director Ron Hagan said the city isn’t pressing to reclaim the site yet because it “has no other use for the property.”
