INS Replaces Stolen Computers at School

The classroom of an Eastside school whose computers had been stolen was abuzz again Thursday with excited students thanks to replacement computers from the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Farmdale Elementary School received 14 computers and monitors and a batch of software through Partnership for Educational Excellence, a cooperative effort of the INS and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The school became the first beneficiary of a larger program that will give schools 325 INS computers and related equipment as part of national project the agency has launched to foster strong relationships with local communities.

“The kids can now participate again in weekly computer classes,” said Principal Jim Morris, whose school serves 850 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. “It’s a vital part of their education.”

During the school’s winter break in December, burglars cleaned out the school’s new computer lab of more than $18,000 in computers, along with refrigerators, microwaves and televisions, school district police said.
