A Salute to Great Women

Nine remarkable females ranging in age from 11 to 104 will be honored Wednesday at the fifth annual International Women’s Day Celebration at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.

Observed elsewhere in the world each March 8 for nearly a century, International Women’s Day has only recently received official status in this country. This year’s honorees are:

* Brenda Blethyn, actor nominated for an Oscar for “Secrets & Lies.”

* Rose Freedman, 104, survivor of the disastrous 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirt Waist Co., a milestone in labor history.

* Alexandra Nechita, 11, artist wunderkind.

* Allison Anders, writer / director of the films “Mi Vida Loca” and “Gas, Food, Lodging.”

* Mitsuye Yamada, survivor of U.S. internment during World War II and former board member of Amnesty International.

* Marcy Polier, founder of Entertainment Data Inc.

* Vivian Brown, CEO of Prototypes, a center for innovation in health, mental health and social services.

* Irene Opdyke and Stefania Burzminski, two women who saved many Polish Jews from the Holocaust.
