Stein Uses $200,000 of Own Money for City Attorney Race
San Fernando Valley attorney and developer Ted Stein on Friday donated $200,000 of his own money to help finance his uphill race to unseat incumbent Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn, a Stein aide said.
Stein, of Encino, has raised about $1.2 million, far outpacing Hahn in fund-raising for the April primary. The challenger has also forsaken an offer of city matching funds for candidates who pledge not to exceed a $900,000 spending limit for the primary.
Stein’s decision gives Hahn the right to raise the maximum donation he can receive from any given donor from $1,000 to $7,000, until he matches the amount Stein took from his own pocket.
