Free diabetes testing will be offered Wednesday at Ventura College as part of American Diabetes Alert, a nationwide campaign to get the word out about diabetes and its causes.

The glucose test screenings are a joint effort of the Ventura College Health Center and the American Diabetes Assn.

According to association officials, the number of people at risk for diabetes is expected to increase with the number of people 50 and older increasing and with one-third of America’s adults overweight.

“Half of our Ventura County residents who have diabetes don’t even know it,” said Dr. Larry Calderon, chairman of the upcoming Walktoberfest fund-raiser, to be held Oct. 25. “Already, ethnic minorities and the elderly are disproportionately affected by diabetes.

“We need to do everything we can to inform people at risk of diabetes, and help them understand how they can live a healthier life by making some modest changes,” he said.

The testing will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the campus patio area. The public is invited.
