Squid Fishing Limits to Be Considered

Share

Ventura County supervisors are being advised to study the issue further before deciding whether to endorse proposed legislation that would limit squid fishing along the state coastline.

The county Fish and Game Commission recently requested that the supervisors urge Gov. Pete Wilson to take emergency action to protect against overfishing in the area. Two-thirds of all the squid caught off the California coast come from waters along Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The commission also asked the Board of Supervisors to support legislation that would place boat and tonnage limits on commercial fishers through April 1, 2001. In addition, it would levy a fee on squid fishing that would be used to pay for research to determine how best to regulate harvesting in the future.

County Chief Administrator Lin Koester has recommended that supervisors monitor reaction to the bill written by state Sen. Byron Sher (D-Stanford) as it makes its way through the Legislature before taking a position. Koester said the reason for this is because the fishing industry appears to be split over the merits of such legislation.

The board will consider Koester’s recommendation at today’s meeting.
