Brian G. Manion; Former President of L.A. Urban League

Brian G. Manion, 74, former president of the Los Angeles Urban League. An attorney, Manion was born in Oshkosh, Wis., and earned his degrees at the University of Denver after service in the Coast Guard during World War II. Manion came to Los Angeles as assistant corporate counsel for the Garrett Corp., and in 1957 set up his own practice, which is now Weinstock, Manion, Reisman, Shore & Neumann. Manion was an active community and civic leader, particularly for civil rights and environmental causes. He helped found the Pacific Palisades Human Relations Council and the Temescal Canyon Associates. In the Urban League, which he joined in 1947, Manion was a national board member as well as president of the Los Angeles chapter. A major sponsor of opera in Southern California, he was a founding board member of the listener-supported radio station KPFK-FM (90.7). He was active in the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Nature Conservancy and strongly opposed opening the Santa Monica Mountains to residential development.
