Just how many vegetarians are there? Estimates run as high as 10% of the U.S. population. . . . The Vegetarian Resource Group based in Baltimore offers a more conservative accounting--between 0.3% and 1% of the population--based on a 1994 study.

Thursday marks the 13th annual Great American Meatout. As in past years, the Farm Animal Reform Movement, which organizes the event, is asking the nation to “kick the meat habit” for a day. Voice for a Viable Future, a nonprofit educational group based in Studio City, is sponsoring a celebration featuring Howard Lyman, a health and environmental lecturer. Actress Linda Blair and comedian Kevin Nealon are expected. The evening includes a vegetarian meal. Information: (818) 509-1255.

Meatless

The Valley offers vegetarians a number of places to shop and dine, including: Whole Foods and Paru’s, both in Northridge; Follow Your Heart, a cafe and health food store in Canoga Park; Leonor’s restaurant in North Hollywood; and Garden Delight restaurant in Granada Hills.
