A 17-year-old taken into custody last week for a probation violation is being investigated for a hate crime against an African American family whose car was burned and house painted with graffiti containing a racial slur.
Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Martin said detectives had information linking the boy to a car fire early last Thursday in the driveway of Michael Daniels, 28, who had moved into an unincorporated neighborhood near Torrance on March 4.
“We are looking at charges for arson [against the 17-year-old],” Martin said Monday. “We will be turning it over to the district attorney’s office soon.”
The teenager, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was taken into custody on Friday and is being housed at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
