Pep Boys Opponents to Appeal Project

Residents opposed to construction of a Pep Boys retail store and automotive service facility in their neighborhood will appeal to the City Council tonight to block the project.

Pep Boys wants to build an 18,560-square-foot structure on a vacant 2-acre site in the Imperial Rose Shopping Center at Imperial Highway and Rose Drive.

City Planner Adrienne Gladson said residents have voiced concerns about noise from automotive equipment and emissions from vehicles that would be serviced there.

Before a Planning Commission hearing on the project in February, city officials received letters, phone calls and petitions with more than 100 signatures from residents opposed to the project.

The Planning Commission on Feb. 11 approved the project on a 3-2 vote on condition that Pep Boys enclose the service bays to minimize noise. Residents appealed the commission’s decision to the council.

Pep Boys officials have also proposed adding a sound barrier wall to the entrance into the service bay, Gladson said.

The council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in chambers, 401 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 993-8231.
