As a young man, Gilbert fought in World War II and was one of the many mine sweepers who helped clear Tokyo Harbor before Gen. Douglas MacArthur signed the peace treaty with Japan.

During his career, Gilbert traveled all over the world selling women’s apparel.

“He was [a salesman] of integrity and a dignified man,” said Patricia Gilbert, his wife of 31 years. “He had an international reputation as a person whose handshake was as good as any written contract.”

After his retirement in 1982 as executive vice president of Adorence Company West, Gilbert was a volunteer for a garment industry agency called Save-a-Life and then became a real estate agent for Don L. Carlton Realtors.

Besides his wife, Gilbert is survived by his sons Taylor and Gilbert of Ventura, and his sister and brother-in-law Horty and Arthur Stone of Beverly Hills.
