Long Beach City Atty. John Calhoun to Retire
Long Beach City Atty. John Calhoun said Wednesday that he will retire and not run for reelection after 12 years as the city’s top civil lawyer.
Calhoun enjoyed the distinction of being an elected official who never had to face an opponent. He was appointed city attorney in 1985 after his friend and mentor, Robert Parkin, was appointed a Superior Court judge. Calhoun ran unopposed in 1986, 1990 and 1994.
“Either I am doing a real good job or there is no one stupid enough to want this job,” said Calhoun, who has worked as a lawyer for the city for the last 36 years.
At 63, the attorney said it was “time for me to think about other things.” He said he will support his top aide, Assistant City Atty. Robert E. Shannon, in the 1998 election.
