U.S. Sues UPS for Alleged Discrimination

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued package-delivery giant United Parcel Service of America Inc., alleging it violated the Americans With Disabilities Act. The class-action lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California, alleges Atlanta-based UPS unlawfully discriminated against employees who had sight in only one eye by refusing to let them drive delivery trucks. “We have people who have been able to drive, are cleared to drive, but yet UPS assumed that these people cannot do the job. That’s a clear violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act,” said William Tamayo, an attorney with the commission. UPS said it believes the lawsuit is without merit.
