City Looks at Joining Disaster-Aid Program
The City Council on Monday will consider joining officials of other cities in a disaster-aid program to help residents following an earthquake, wildfire or other catastrophe.
Under the mutual-aid agreement, participating cities agree to send staff members to training programs to learn how to assess building damage, identify safe structures and speed application processes for state and federal aid.
In the event of an emergency, cities in need would get help from the staffs of nearby municipalities.
Eleven Orange County cities, including Los Alamitos neighbors Cypress and Seal Beach, have already joined the program.
There is no cost for a city to sign up. However, in the event of a disaster, Los Alamitos would be responsible for reimbursing other cities for costs incurred while giving help. The city would then seek reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
