Writer to Discuss Russia’s Struggles

What does the future of Russia hold for the West and the rest of the world? On Tuesday, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Remnick will discuss the struggle to build a Russian state, at a World Trade Council dinner in Camarillo.

A staff writer for New Yorker magazine and an expert on Russian affairs, Remnick will discuss Russian President Boris Yeltsin’s unwillingness or inability to create consensus for societal change as well as his vacillation between democracy and nationalism.

Russia-watchers throughout the world have been particularly concerned about the decline of Russia’s newspapers, state TV’s emergence as the dominant news medium, and the growth of both opportunity and inequality, Remnick said.

He will also address the meaning of the 1996 Soviet elections, Russia’s long-term prospects for a stable democracy, and how reactionary figure Vladimir Zhironovsky and free-market economist Yegor Gaidar will affect the future.

The event, which will be held at the Spanish Hills Country Club, 999 Crestview Ave., begins at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner. Tickets are $18 for World Affairs Council members; $25 for nonmembers; and $28 at the door.
