Toyota Motor Corp. said it will sell a mass-produced passenger car powered by a combination of gasoline and electricity by the end of the year. Japan’s largest auto maker has not said whether one of its existing models or a new model will use the power system. A gasoline engine is the main power source for the vehicle, Toyota said. An electric motor and generator work in tandem with the engine to improve fuel efficiency and cut exhaust emissions. The electric motor kicks in when the vehicle is accelerating or slowing down, leaving the gasoline engine running at a constant speed, the auto maker said.
