Fire Agency Unveils Updated Technology

The Los Angeles City Fire Department took a step toward the space age Tuesday at a Westside unveiling of a technology system for its trucks, stations and fire command posts that authorities say could save both lives and staff hours.

The system includes 700 new computers that will link the department’s 102 fire stations, 19 in-vehicle fax machines to help track information during emergencies and 8,000 new radios to be used at fire and emergency scenes.

Flanked by dozens of community leaders at Fire Station 59 on West Olympic Boulevard, Mayor Richard Riordan introduced what officials called the first comprehensive technology system in the department’s 100-year history.

“With this technology, we’ll give our firefighters and paramedics the tools to do their job even better,” Riordan said.

Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks was the first to receive the new technology, officials said. Other stations will follow throughout the year.
