Eight School Groups Split Suit Settlement
Eight county school organizations received a total of about $780,000 Wednesday for cable and other telecommunications services as part of a settlement of a lawsuit against Time Warner Communications by the county district attorney’s office.
The settlement, reached in 1995, was between the district attorney and Paragon Cable, which has since been acquired by Time Warner.
The district attorney’s office had alleged that the cable company was overcharging its 99,000 customers with an $11 late fee.
Without admitting any wrongdoing, Paragon settled with the district attorney’s office by agreeing to set aside $1 million for restitution to customers who requested it and to pay more than $350,000 in civil penalties and to cover costs of the investigation.
About $150,000 of the restitution fund was paid out to customers. Under terms of the settlement, the rest was divided among Orange County school systems in the cities served by Paragon: Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Stanton, Westminster, Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach.
Grants went to Coast Community College District; Garden Grove Unified, Huntington Beach Union, Huntington Beach City, Los Alamitos, Ocean View and Westminster school districts; and the Orange County Teachers’ Center.
