Mosquito Boom Can Be Reduced

Share

County officials are warning residents about a potential problem that they can help avoid: swarms of mosquitoes.

Because of last month’s heavy rains, Orange County Vector Control officials said, a mosquito breeding boom is likely this spring.

Officials recommend that homeowners check containers such as cans, old tires and wheelbarrows for water accumulation from the rains.

The standing water should be emptied to reduce the likelihood of the insects’ breeding there, officials said.

Mosquito-eating fish are available free from the Vector Control District.

The fish can be stocked in ornamental ponds and other permanent water sources such as unused swimming pools, where they consume insects and larvae.
