Rising Mississippi Forces Evacuations

Flood waters continued to surge down the Mississippi River, forcing evacuations in low-lying areas as the river’s crest approached Baton Rouge, La., officials said. Backwater flooding along tributaries feeding into the great river closed roads and forced hundreds of families to move to emergency shelters on higher ground in central and southern Louisiana, the officials said.
