Bishop Quits Board After Uttering Slur
A bishop has resigned from the board of a Roman Catholic charity for using a racial slur.
Bishop Lawrence McNamara, 68, said Thursday that he was paraphrasing what others had told him over the years and “did not express my own attitude.” He used a derogatory term for African Americans when describing comments from people who complained about the recipients of aid from Catholic Relief Services.
McNamara said he was resigning to avoid controversy for the charity, which spends about $300 million a year to help the poor in 79 countries.
