Red Cross Honors 3 Individuals for Their First-Aid Efforts

A Huntington Beach woman who saved a drowning man, a Yorba Linda woman who revived a co-worker having a heart attack and a Yorba Linda man who helped a child injured in a bike accident were recipients last week of Courage to Respond Awards from the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Cathy Andrew, a volunteer Red Cross instructor, pulled Carl Davis from the deep end of a pool in Palm Springs in October and revived him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

She has since been nominated for the Red Cross’ highest national award, the Certificate of Merit.

In January, Maggie Lou of C&L; Refrigeration in Brea gave CPR to co-worker Shirley Jackson, who was having a heart attack.

Paramedics later told Lou that Jackson’s heart stopped three times on the way to the hospital, and she wouldn’t have survived if not for Lou’s first aid.

Also honored was Darryl Fong, a Red Cross volunteer from Yorba Linda. A 10-year-old boy was hurt in a bike accident outside Fong’s first-aid class at Fullerton’s Hillcrest Park in November.

Fong helped the boy by administering aid and finding him a ride home.
