7 Die in Attack on Cambodia Rally
Seven people were killed and 25 were wounded--including Cambodia’s leading opposition politician--in a grenade attack today at a political demonstration, police and witnesses said.
Three grenades were thrown from a passing vehicle as Khmer Nation Party leader Sam Rainsy led a rally in front of the National Assembly, police said.
Witnesses said Rainsy was struck in the head by shrapnel. He was taken to the home of First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
There were no reports of arrests, but suspicion immediately fell on the Cambodian People’s Party, the ruling coalition partner.
The rally was against the People’s Party, which Khmer Nation has accused of corruption and attacks on its members.
The explosions sparked fears that the run-up to the parliamentary elections next year will be marked by violence.
