Yet again it seems that the most essential of government programs are those that often get axed or trimmed in spending cuts.

The decision to cut funds for the National Hurricane Center (March 25) is an example of short-term economic mismanagement and folly, putting the lives and businesses of millions of Americans on the Gulf Coast and Eastern seaboard in unnecessary and very real danger. Hurricanes threaten these areas every year and the prospect of a catastrophe, such as a Category 5 storm hitting a major city without adequate warning, becomes a horrible possibility. The thinking behind this grossly irresponsible planning is unfathomable and represents utter disregard of public safety.
