A St. Louis architectural firm hired by the city to design the Anaheim Convention Center expansion will give the City Council an update at a 2 p.m. workshop today.

Public Works Director Gary Johnson said that representatives of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc. will present the council with the latest plans, renderings and models.

The $120-million project will expand the convention center’s meeting space by 40% and will add a 215,000-square-foot atrium along the eastern side of the building. The atrium will be used for registration and lobby areas and to “create a different look” for the center, said Jack Plake, city engineering contract administrator. An additional 220,000 square feet of exhibit space is also planned.

Plake said improvements will be built in two phases, with the expansion of the exhibit halls expected to start in mid-July. The second phase, which will include renovation of existing exhibit halls and the construction of meeting rooms and exhibit space, is set for completion by late 2000. The 30-year-old convention center was last renovated in 1993.

Separately, the council today will seek public comment on a proposal to expand the Anaheim Hills Festival shopping center at Santa Ana Canyon and Roosevelt roads.

The project would add up to 1,500 seats to the movie theater, re-designate 20,000 square feet for retail use and build a health club and child day-care facility.

The workshop will be in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. The council meeting will follow at 5 p.m. Information: (714) 254-5166.
