City to Weigh Taxi Program

Share

Like most other municipalities in South County, Laguna Niguel does not regulate taxi service now, but it is considering doing so.

The City Council is set to vote tonight on whether to join the Orange County Taxi Administration Program, which would standardize cab rules.

Each city now does its own licensing and regulation of taxi companies.

The agency would issue licenses, check the backgrounds of cab drivers and perform other tasks now done city by city.

“The direct benefit is safety,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Davis, Laguna Niguel’s chief of police services. “Plus, this program will make it easier on taxi companies without multiplying bureaucracy in every city.”

Joining the program, which would be managed by the Orange County Transportation Authority, would also save city staffs the time now required to research and propose taxi regulations, Davis said.

On April 28, OCTA will decide whether to proceed with the cab program, based on how many cities have signed up.

The City Council will meet at 7 tonight at City Hall, 27801 La Paz Road.
