Deputy Killed, CHP Officer Wounded in Separate Incidents
A sheriff’s deputy responding to a report of a shootout between two brothers was killed Tuesday when one man fired at the officer through the door of his motor home, authorities said.
A separate shooting near San Diego left a California Highway Patrol officer and a motorist wounded.
The unidentified Yuba County sheriff’s deputy was pronounced dead Tuesday evening, Sheriff Gary Tindel said. He is the first Yuba County sheriff’s deputy killed on duty since 1972.
The deputy was among several officers dispatched to a mobile home after a report of gunfire between two brothers engaged in a long-standing dispute, deputies said.
The officer was shot in the chest at the home where Robert Peterson, suspected of shooting his brother in the leg earlier, was believed to be hiding. Peterson was held on suspicion of murder.
Earlier, a 15-minute pursuit between a CHP officer and a motorist ended in an exchange of gunfire in Ramona, near San Diego, wounding the officer in the thigh and possibly killing the motorist, authorities said.
