City Hopes to Boost Shopping by Tourists

The city’s Redevelopment Agency is taking part in a program that officials hope will promote businesses in and around the Metro, Town and Orangefair shopping centers.

The City Council, acting in its role as the Redevelopment Agency this week, approved spending $10,000 for “Shopper’s Expedition Express,” which provides taxi service to retail areas for guests at local hotels.

Under the program, the agency will work with the Downtown Business Assn. and the shopping centers to develop promotional materials such as coupons, which will be placed in racks at hotels in Anaheim, Fullerton, Buena Park and Placentia.

The Riverside Freeway widening project prompted the program, city officials said, because the temporary traffic congestion it causes may discourage potential shoppers.

The program may “inspire people to shop Fullerton,” Councilman F. Richard Jones said. “This is a wonderful idea.”

In other action, the City Council on Tuesday approved a code change that makes it easier for businesses to erect signs that can be seen by freeway motorists. Merchants who want such signs no longer will be required to obtain permits to do so.
