Valley Births

One look at 1994 birth statistics shows the diversity of the San Fernando Valley, where great disparities exist in the birthrate, infant death rate and percentage of underage mothers.

Birthrates in Valley communities in 1994 range from 7.7 to 29.8 per 1,000 population, and the infant death rate fluctuates from 2.3 to 18.2. The percentage of underage mothers--those under 18--varies from .0% to 7.3%, according to figures recently released by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

The percentage of underage mothers countywide having babies, about 5%, has remained about the same since 1990 and is lower than the 6% it was in 1970. The number of births to teens younger than 16 has risen slightly, but the number of births to 16- and 17-year-olds has declined somewhat since 1990.

The number of births to underage mothers has dropped in the past 20 years, in large part due to abortion, which was legalized by the 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Row vs. Wade, according to Gerry Luethy, a Cal State Northridge child development and family relations professor who has worked with teen moms in several different programs.
