Study Finds Schools Are More Segregated

America’s public schools are slipping back into racial segregation, according to a new study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Researchers found that between 1991 and 1994, there was the largest backward movement toward segregation since the Supreme Court’s 1954 landmark ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education, and the trend was likely to continue. The study, based on public-school enrollment statistics, claims schools have become resegregated as the nonwhite population becomes increasingly concentrated in urban areas. The country’s 10 largest inner-city school districts are predominantly black and Latino, the report says.
