Qualcomm Inc. said a federal court granted a temporary restraining order against rival phone maker Motorola Inc. The U.S. District Court on Friday issued the order prohibiting Motorola from communicating with Qualcomm customers and suppliers regarding Qualcomm’s 5-ounce “Q” phone. Last month Qualcomm sued Motorola, seeking a declaratory judgment that its products don’t infringe Motorola’s patents. Motorola then sued Qualcoom, alleging patent infringement for its popular StarTac wireless phone. Motorola charged that Qualcomm designed its “Q” phone while the companies were negotiating for license under Motorola’s patents on a wireless technology known as code-division multiple-access. Qualcomm shares rose $1.25 to close at $60.125 on Nasdaq; Motorola rose $1.375 to $61.125 on the NYSE.
