Experts to Give Tips on Preserving Oaks

Share

Arborists and horticulturists will answer oak tree-related questions. Speakers will discuss oak-related topics and show slides of Ojai oaks. And plants appropriate for growing under oak trees will be available for sale.

“Ojai’s Heritage Oaks Day” on Saturday will celebrate the majestic oaks valued by local residents. The educational forum, intended to help preserve the trees, is being held in conjunction with Arbor Day and Earth Day.

The event is being sponsored by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and the Ojai Valley Horticultural Society. The groups have tabbed high school students to distribute a brochure this month that contains advice to oak tree owners on how to preserve the trees, which are in danger of disappearing.

“During our research, we have discovered that 75% of the oak trees on private grounds in Ojai are in some way weakened by landscape practices,” said Caryn Bosson, project coordinator.

Other activities during the free event include environmental activities for children and a performance by local musician Seabury Gould.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ojai demonstration garden behind City Hall, 401 S. Ventura St.
