This Pen Is Mightier; It Costs More Anyway

Share

Here’s a pen you wouldn’t dream of chewing on.

The $125,000 Montblanc Diamond Solitaire Royal Fountain Pen, said to be the most expensive writing instrument in the world, is on display at the Montblanc Boutique at South Coast Plaza.

More than 4,810 diamonds totaling 40 karats surround the jeweled writing utensil from Germany. Master jewelers used a microscope to set the diamonds, spending nine months to make just one pen.

Montblanc won’t say how many have been sold worldwide. So far there haven’t been any takers in Orange County.

“We’ve had quite a few people coming in to look at it and inquire about it but as far as serious buyers, we haven’t had any yet--but don’t forget the word ‘yet,’ ” said Mitra Kianian, manager of the Montblanc Boutique, which opened April 4.

The pen is on display from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Sunday.
