They Simply Got Their Just Dessert

Coach Bill Fitch said before the game he was worried that the Clippers, who already have clinched their first playoff berth in four seasons, may be sluggish in their final two regular-season games against the Lakers and Seattle SuperSonics because they’re preoccupied with next week’s first-round series against the Utah Jazz, who have the best record in the Western Conference.

“If you’ve got apple pie, peach pie and you know you’ve got chocolate cake, how much do you fool around with the apple or peach pie when you know you’ve got chocolate cake?” Fitch asked.

“But if they use this as a test of quality of play, this could help them.”

Fitch’s worst fears were realized when the Clippers fell behind the Lakers by 21 points in the first quarter.
