Skate Event Brings Out the Best in Kids

Share

I recently attended the Thousand Oaks Teen Center In-Line Skating Competition. There was a large group of teens, mostly boys, competing either on roller blades or skateboards on a well-designed street course. Most were dressed similarly, in oversized pants, T-shirts and hats. Their demeanor was friendly and well-mannered.

I was amazed at the organization of the event, but more impressed by the behavior of the crowd of adolescents. They were truly supportive of each other, no matter novice or advanced status. I, as an adult observer, was met with politeness and courtesy. When I was straining to see over the crowd, one teen asked if I could see OK and moved aside. Another bumped into me accidentally and excused himself.

It was an insightful experience. Too often adults are quick to pass judgment on teenagers as unfavorable due to the clothes they wear or the cockiness they can show. This was a positive gathering, the teens were on the street but participating in a meaningful sport activity. I would hope there would be more sponsored events such as this competition that sadly happens only once a year. If we provide such opportunities, then maybe teens will be less likely to turn to maleficent activities.
