Day Runner Inc.: The Irvine manufacturer of organizers and planners said net income for the third fiscal quarter dropped to $58,000, or 1 cent a share, from $745,000, or 11 cents a share, for the corresponding period last year. The company attributed the decline to about $1.5 million in costs incurred in pursuing two acquisitions that were not completed. Sales grew 16% to $21 million from $18.1 million. Net income for the nine months was $8.4 million, or $1.26 a share, down 5% from the $8.8 million, or $1.35 a share, for the like period of the prior year. Sales declined 2% to $89.6 million from $91 million.
